Mobile security is taking an increasingly central role in the business environment
The security of data and information of a company, as well as that of an individual, is fundamental, so much that mobile security is getting an increasing attention within the company organization.
This happens because the company’s data protection must take into account that these already circulate through the devices used by the employees in order to do their job out of the company’s building and the office.
Just think that the same legislation is both national and international in the matter of data protection, which assimilates smatphones, tablets and PC of the company into the company’s server, imposing a safe and reliable management as it is required for any other business asset.
Among the menaces to mobile security, we find as well the spread of the 5G net, and that’s what we are going to talk about today.
5G What is it
Let’s start, though, from the beginning and to explain first of all what do we mean when we talk about 5G.
5G is the mobile network technology that will overcome the 4G LTE, but it’s still in an experimental phase just in some cities, that’s because it’s still a little unsteady and its functioning is surrounded by a thousand questions.
More in detail, when we talk about 5G we mean to refer to technology and standards of the latest generation in the mobile communication field and that implement the previous versions, such as 2G, 3G and 4G.
We are going to use this connection techonology soon, on smartphones and connected objects, such as cars, household appliances, street lights, traffic lights, clocks and so on, in a perspective of Internet of Things.
This will be possible thanks to the fact that this network will be able to keep more connections at the same time, without sinning in terms of speed and response times.
Compared to 4G, 5G has very different technical features: a larger amount of bandwidth, higher speed and a different way to manage communications and coverage, thanks to frequencies, antennas and data transmission techniques completely different from those of the past.
To date, it is expected to be implemented in 2020 and 2021, so that more services and coverage are expected.
Of course, we can’t deny that the advantages of this technology will be remarkable.
Compared to the previous ones, it allows:
- a higher transmission rate: potentially, 5G can reach up to 10 Gigabit per second; we’re talking about a 10 times higher speed to the 4G’s;
- lower response times and higher performance: response times to the command given to the connected object will drop to 1-10 milliseconds, so at least 10 times less than the current 50-100 milliseconds of 4G;
- the possibility to manage a high number of connections at the same time.
Moreover, will increase the new services available to users!
Every innovation, though, brings with it fears about potential threats to our health, without mentioning that not every cellphone model on sale nowadays in Italy supports 5G nets, even if the numbers is increasing, with prices that goes from 400 to 1300 euros.

Disadvantages for the mobile security
Among the most significant disadvantages, though, there are of course risks related to the mobile security and privacy.
In particular, billions of cameras and sensors are expected to be put on the market, which will surely affect people’s privacy and which, if violated, can give access to an unthinkable amount of information.
Without mentioning that that is one of the advantages of the 5G net, which means the possibility to connect thousands of devices to each other at a low price and at the same time, hides a considerable danger.
It’s well-known , indeed, that an increase of the data and volumes transfer speed matches to a growth in possibilities of intrusions by malicious third parties.
Every device, indeed, will collect millions of data, which will be put on the internet.
So, the cyber threats will increase exponentially, due to the evolution and the growth of connectivity of more systems in the 5G’s world will pave the way to countless cyber risks.
With the dissemination of this technology, the shortcomings and defects of equipment, customer frameworks and authorities administrations will be evident. These weak points could be an entry point for any attackers who want to damage and compromise Telco infrastructure, by spying on clients and diverting the traffic.
Cyber criminals can detect potential weaknesses, inject the malware and start to communicate with the compromised devices, starting the attack.
Mobile network operators will have to defend themselves against this threat, using a multi-level approach.
In addition, thanks to the high speed of 5G, it is even more difficult to detect threats in time, before they cause any damage.
