How would you react, knowing that your phone is under control?
The recent enquiries of the Blooberg newspaper and of others have brought into sharp relief the activities of the listening and transcription of conversations perpetrated from Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple, without the knowledge of the users. According to the anonymous testimonies and the statements of the companies themselves, the crucial point is the audio recording.
The ones that we send on WhatsApp or Messenger, but also the ones that we record with Siri, on iOS (Apple), or through the new vocal assistants like Google Home or Amazon Alexa. Basically, thanks to these devices, The informatics multinationals can listen to us and know everything.
To aggravate the situation, there are also many cases when the conversations are recorded and transcripted by third parties, for example by external agencies that work for Amazon or Facebook as contractors. Private conversations, if not reserved, would fall into the hands (and in the ears) of perfect strangers, with wide margins of options for extrapolating information, blackmailing a person and abusing of the acquired knowledge. About that, an Apple contractor said to The Guardian:
There’s not much control over who works there, and the quantity of data that we are free to examine seems quite wide. It wouldn’t be difficult to identify the person you’re listening to, especially with accidental triggers: addresses, names and so on.
TRICKS AND ADVICE TO PROTECT YOUR RIGHTS
As consumers, and clients of a company, we should have the right to be protected and respected. Anyway, this doesn’t always happen: even though the representatives of Google, Facebook & Co sustain that only a very low percentage of conversations is recorded, there are not enough guarantees, neither within the conditions of use nor in any other form.
If we want to defend ourselves, we have to take the initiative and adopt some simple measures. The first and more logical one, if it’s possible, is to avoid the purchase of vocal assistants, while for the phones apps we can revoke the authorisations to access to the microphone (losing many functionalities, though). The final solution to be relaxed is, nevertheless, another one and it’s called End-to-end Encryption. Thanks to this technology, the vocal conversations, just like messages, are transmitted to the addressee without any risk of being intercepted. This is what happen with our web app Cripty Talk, a military security level app that, in contrast to Telegram, Wechat, WhatsApp and others, stays thoroughly anonymous, encrypted and anti-tappings.
Thanks to the cloud storage, Cripty Talk eliminates every piece of data from the smartphone and offers the possibility to automatically delete messages and conversations after a certain amount of time. Moreover, in emergency mode, Cripty Talk will freeze at the end of the deadline you indicated… and many other functions, useful for ensuring a complete and real privacy.
